In Vanguard, players pilot the ship Vanguard that has to cruise through the cave of Gond. The cave has been divided into various sections. Each section has different features in it, as well in its orientation. It can be horizontal or vertical, or diagonal. The four guns on the ship can be fired in different directions. The players may also be able to use energy power-ups which make them invincible briefly. The aim is to eliminate the Gond by reaching the end of every cave.
