Atari did not plan to develop a Chess Game to play on the Atari 2600 at the time the system was introduced. But the original VCS box did have a chess piece on it and Atari was eventually brought into court by a resident of Florida due to the lack of a Chess game for the system. Atari engineers began working on a 2600 version of Chess several years after the fact.
