Chrono Cross is, though it is an update to Chronotrigger, is a totally different video game for role-playing. It has over 40 characters and a branching plot line. There are also several endings. The game, just like its predecessors, is about crossing the line between time and putting things in order. The story revolves around the search of Serge for the Frozen flame, which gives holders the ability to alter the time and space. Serge seeks to prevent his death in a parallel universe but, as you can guess, nefarious forces are also vying for the Frozen Flame to suit their own purposes. Chrono Cross has the chic characters and stunning cut scenes that players have come to expect from SquareSoft, but the game also includes a number of game-changing features. The battle engine is turn-based but characters do not have to wait for their turn before they can cast a spell or engage in an attack. Instead, combat is tempered by endurance. The recurring fights between lesser monsters which makes many RPGs drag on, can also be avoided because all monsters can be seen.
